busting Bathroom Myths That Cost You Money!!

Bad advice spreads fast ... Thinking about remodeling your bathroom? You've probably heard a few things that made you hesitate. Let's clear them up.

The Belief:
Tiling over existing tile saves demolition costs and time. The new tile bonds to the old, and you get a fresh look without the mess.

The Reality:
Tiling over tile adds thickness that affects door clearance, toilet height, transitions to other rooms, and vanity fit. The bond between old and new tile is weaker than tile bonded to proper substrate. If the old tile fails - and it will eventually - both layers come down together. More importantly, you cannot inspect the substrate underneath. Water damage, mold, and structural problems hide behind that old tile. Professionals remove existing tile because they know what happens when you cover up problems instead of fixing them.

The Belief:
Permits cost money and slow down projects. Plenty of people remodel bathrooms without permits and nothing bad happens.

The Reality:
Permits exist to ensure work meets code - code that exists because bathrooms have killed people. Improper electrical near water, inadequate ventilation causing mold, structural failures from removed walls. When you sell your home, unpermitted work must be disclosed. Buyers walk away or demand deep discounts. Insurance claims get denied when unpermitted work is discovered. And the contractor who skips permits is telling you exactly how they cut corners everywhere else.

The Belief:
Tile is tile. The expensive stuff is just brand markup. The discount tile at the warehouse looks the same.

The Reality:
Tile varies enormously in quality. Water absorption ratings determine if tile can go in wet areas - the wrong rating and your shower tile absorbs water, grows mold behind it, and fails. Coefficient of friction determines if floor tile is safe to walk on wet. Tile hardness affects wear and chip resistance. Cheap tile is often dimensionally inconsistent, making installation difficult and results uneven. The difference between $2/sq ft tile and $6/sq ft tile is not just appearance - it is performance and longevity.

The Belief:
Labor is half the cost of a bathroom remodel. Do it yourself and save thousands.

The Reality:
The things you can safely DIY - painting, accessories, simple vanity swap - are the lowest-cost parts of a remodel. The expensive parts require skills: waterproofing, tile setting, plumbing, and electrical. DIY waterproofing failures cause the most expensive bathroom disasters. Amateur tile work looks amateur forever. Plumbing and electrical mistakes create leaks, fires, and code violations. The real DIY calculation: you will spend 3-5x the time a pro would, your results will be visibly inferior, and your mistakes will cost more to fix than hiring correctly the first time.

The Belief:
Installing the latest trends makes your bathroom worth more. The home shows all have vessel sinks and barn doors, so that is what buyers want.

The Reality:
Trends date faster than quality. The vessel sinks that look cutting-edge today look dated in five years. Barn doors on bathrooms are already becoming the shiplap of 2020 - a marker of a specific time rather than timeless design. Unusual tile patterns, bold colors, and statement fixtures appeal to some buyers and actively repel others. Classic design - white subway tile, neutral colors, traditional shapes - never dates. It lets buyers project their own style onto the space. The most valuable bathroom is the one that does not scream any particular era.
